What is Tooth Sensitivity?
You take a sip of cold water and a sharp jolt shoots through your tooth. It fades in seconds, so you shrug it off. Then it happens with ice cream. Then with hot coffee. Eventually you find yourself chewing on one side, skipping the cold drinks you enjoy, and quietly rearranging your meals around a tooth you have started to avoid.
This is dentinal hypersensitivity, more commonly called tooth sensitivity. It is one of the most common dental complaints, and almost anyone can develop it — either through everyday habits or as a side effect of another condition or treatment.
To understand why it happens, you need to know what sits underneath your tooth's surface. The outer layer is enamel, the hard protective shell. Beneath it lies dentin, a softer layer that covers the pulp where your nerves and blood vessels live. Dentin is not solid — it contains thousands of microscopic tubules that lead directly toward the nerve.
While enamel stays intact, those tubules stay sealed off. Once enamel is worn, damaged, or the tooth root becomes exposed, hot, cold, sweet, and acidic stimuli can reach the dentin and travel straight down to the nerve. That is the jolt you feel. The pain is short and sharp rather than a dull, lingering ache — and that distinction matters, because a lingering ache points to a different problem entirely.
What Causes Tooth Sensitivity?
Sensitivity is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Finding the underlying cause is what determines the right treatment, and there are several common culprits.
Untreated Tooth Decay
Sensitivity is one of the earliest symptoms of tooth decay. Decay begins as a tiny hole or scratch in the enamel, far too small to see in the mirror. Once bacteria breach the enamel, your dentin becomes exposed to the temperature of everything you eat and drink — sometimes even to cold air. Catching decay at this stage means a simple filling. How Tooth Sensitivity is Treated

Most sensitivity is preventable, and the daily habits that protect enamel are simple.
- Switch to a soft-bristled brush and ease off the pressure. Hold the brush lightly and let the bristles do the work. If your bristles splay outward within a month, you are pressing too hard.
- Replace toothpicks with floss or interdental brushes. They clean between teeth more effectively without scratching enamel or damaging the gums.
