The parotid gland wraps around the facial nerve, which controls every expression of your face. This page explains how THANC plans parotid surgery around cancer clearance and protecting every branch of that nerve.

About Parotidectomy at THANC

Parotidectomy is the surgical removal of part or all of the parotid gland — most commonly for benign tumours (such as pleomorphic adenoma) and selected cancers. At THANC, our head and neck team performs superficial and total parotidectomy using continuous facial nerve monitoring, meticulous dissection and a well-placed, discreet incision. The goal is complete tumour removal with full preservation of facial nerve function wherever oncologically safe.

Who Needs Parotidectomy?

You may be a candidate if you experience any of the following:

  • A lump in front of or below the ear that is growing or persistent
  • Biopsy-proven benign parotid tumour — most commonly pleomorphic adenoma
  • Warthin tumour or other benign parotid neoplasms
  • Parotid malignancy requiring oncological surgery
  • Recurrent parotitis or sialolithiasis not improving with conservative treatment
  • Suspicious imaging findings that need surgical diagnosis and removal

What to Expect

A clear step-by-step view of your treatment journey at THANC.

  1. 1

    Assessment & Imaging

A detailed clinical examination, ultrasound and — where needed — CECT or MRI map the tumour and its relationship to the facial nerve. FNAC or core biopsy is often performed before surgery to plan extent.

  2. 2

    The Surgery

Performed under general anaesthesia through a carefully placed pre-auricular incision extending into a neck crease. Continuous facial nerve monitoring guides safe dissection along every branch of the nerve, and the diseased portion of the gland is removed for histopathology.

  3. 3

    Hospital Stay

Most patients stay one to two nights. A small drain may be used and removed before discharge. Pain is generally well controlled, and any temporary facial weakness from nerve handling usually recovers over weeks.

  4. 4

    Follow-up & Healing

The wound heals discreetly in the natural skin crease. Histopathology guides any further treatment for cancer cases, and a follow-up facial nerve check confirms preserved function. Frey syndrome, if it occurs, is managed conservatively.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my face droop after parotidectomy?
The facial nerve is carefully identified and protected with continuous nerve monitoring. Temporary weakness from nerve handling can occur and usually recovers over weeks to months. Permanent nerve injury is uncommon for benign tumours when surgery is performed by an experienced head and neck team.
How big will the scar be?
The incision starts in front of the ear and extends into a natural neck skin crease. Once healed, it fades to a fine line and is usually barely visible. We use meticulous closure and scar care guidance to give the best cosmetic outcome.
Is my parotid lump cancerous?
Most parotid lumps are benign, but a small proportion are cancerous. Clinical examination, imaging and FNAC together give a strong indication before surgery, and final diagnosis is confirmed by histopathology of the removed specimen.
How long is the recovery after parotidectomy?
Most patients resume light activity and desk work within a week. Strenuous exercise, heavy lifting and contact sports are avoided for 2 to 3 weeks. Complete recovery of any nerve handling fatigue can take several weeks.
Will THANC provide a personalised estimate for parotidectomy?
Yes. After your consultation, imaging and biopsy review, our team shares a written, case-specific estimate based on the type of parotidectomy planned. THANC's rates are consistently lower than prevailing market rates in Chennai.
