Chronic ear disease is as much about making the ear safe long-term as it is about hearing. This page explains how THANC plans mastoidectomy around both goals — disease clearance and a dry ear you can live with.

About Mastoidectomy at THANC

Mastoidectomy is a microsurgical procedure to clear chronic infection or cholesteatoma from the mastoid bone behind the ear and to make the ear safe and dry for the long term. At THANC, our otology team performs canal-wall-up, canal-wall-down and modified radical mastoidectomy depending on the disease pattern, often combined with tympanoplasty and, where possible, reconstruction of the ossicular chain to preserve or improve hearing.

Who Needs Mastoidectomy?

You may be a candidate if you experience any of the following:

  • Chronic suppurative otitis media not healing on medical therapy
  • Cholesteatoma (a destructive skin growth in the middle ear)
  • Recurrent ear discharge after previous middle ear surgery
  • Ear disease spreading to the mastoid bone on imaging
  • Complications of chronic ear disease such as facial weakness or vertigo
  • Conductive hearing loss with unsafe chronic ear disease

What to Expect

A clear step-by-step view of your treatment journey at THANC.

  1. 1

    Ear Assessment

Microscopic ear examination, audiometry and a high-resolution CT scan of the temporal bone map the extent of disease and the anatomy around the facial nerve and inner ear.

  2. 2

    The Surgery

Performed under general anaesthesia through an incision behind the ear. Using an operating microscope and high-speed drilling, the surgeon clears disease from the mastoid air cells while carefully protecting the facial nerve, inner ear and dura. Tympanoplasty and ossicular reconstruction are often added in the same sitting.

  3. 3

    Hospital Stay

Most patients stay one to two nights. The ear is dressed and pain is generally mild. Vertigo, if any, is usually short-lived and settles within a day or two.

  4. 4

    Follow-up & Dry Ear

The wound heals in about a week. A microscopic ear clean-up at 4 to 6 weeks confirms good healing, and hearing is reassessed with an audiogram once the ear is fully settled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is mastoidectomy a major surgery?
Mastoidectomy is a precise microsurgical operation rather than a highly invasive one. There are no large external cuts, and most patients stay only one to two nights in hospital. With an experienced otology team, it has a strong safety profile.
Will my hearing get better after mastoidectomy?
The first goal is a safe, dry ear. Hearing improvement depends on the condition of the eardrum and the tiny hearing bones and whether reconstruction is possible. In many cases we can perform tympanoplasty and ossicular reconstruction in the same sitting to improve hearing.
How long will the ear take to heal after surgery?
The external wound heals in about a week, and most patients return to light work within 7 to 10 days. The inner healing of the mastoid cavity takes several weeks, and we see you back for careful microscopic clean-ups to guide recovery.
Can I fly or swim after mastoidectomy?
Flying is usually safe once the ear has settled, typically after 2 to 3 weeks. Swimming is avoided until your surgeon confirms the ear is fully dry and the eardrum is healed, especially in open cavity procedures.
Will THANC provide a personalised estimate for my mastoidectomy case?
Yes. After your consultation, imaging and audiogram review, our team shares a written, case-specific estimate based on the type of mastoidectomy, reconstruction planned and anaesthesia. THANC's rates are consistently lower than prevailing market rates in Chennai.
