Laryngectomy is not just cancer surgery — it changes how you breathe, eat and speak. This page explains how THANC plans total and partial laryngectomy around cancer control and a structured voice, swallowing and stoma rehabilitation pathway.

About Laryngectomy at THANC

Laryngectomy is the surgical removal of part or all of the larynx (voice box), performed for advanced or recurrent laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer. At THANC, our head and neck oncology team performs total and partial laryngectomy with careful pre-operative planning, tumour board review and a structured rehabilitation pathway covering stoma care, swallowing therapy and voice restoration. Neck dissection is often performed in the same sitting for disease control.

Who Needs Laryngectomy?

You may be a candidate if you experience any of the following:

  • Advanced laryngeal cancer not suitable for larynx-preserving treatment
  • Recurrent or residual laryngeal cancer after radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy
  • Hypopharyngeal cancer involving the larynx
  • Selected intermediate-stage laryngeal cancer where surgery is preferred
  • Non-functional larynx after prior treatment causing aspiration or airway compromise
  • Salvage surgery after failed organ preservation protocols

What to Expect

A clear step-by-step view of your treatment journey at THANC.

  1. 1

    Multidisciplinary Planning

Every case is reviewed at our head and neck tumour board. Imaging, endoscopy, biopsy and performance status guide the decision between total and partial laryngectomy, the extent of neck dissection and whether reconstruction is needed.

  2. 2

    The Surgery

Performed under general anaesthesia through a carefully planned neck incision. The larynx is removed with clear oncological margins, a permanent tracheostoma is created for breathing, and the pharynx is reconstructed for swallowing. Neck dissection is often performed in the same sitting.

  3. 3

    Hospital Stay & Early Recovery

A structured stay covers airway care, stoma education, feeding support and wound healing. A multidisciplinary team — head and neck surgery, speech-language pathology, nutrition and nursing — guides every step.

  4. 4

    Voice Rehabilitation

Voice restoration options — voice prosthesis, oesophageal voice or electrolarynx — are discussed before surgery and implemented as recovery allows. Long-term oncology follow-up and swallowing therapy complete the pathway.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be able to speak after a total laryngectomy?
Yes. Although the natural voice box is removed, voice can be restored using a tracheo-oesophageal voice prosthesis, oesophageal voice or an electrolarynx. At THANC, voice rehabilitation is discussed and planned before surgery so recovery begins as soon as it is safe.
How will I eat after laryngectomy?
Feeding is usually supported by a temporary feeding tube in the early recovery phase. Oral swallowing is gradually resumed once the surgical site has healed, guided by the speech-language pathology team. Most patients regain a safe, satisfying oral diet.
Will I breathe through my nose again after laryngectomy?
After total laryngectomy, breathing is through a permanent tracheostoma at the lower neck rather than the nose. Heat and moisture exchangers help condition the air you breathe and protect the lower airway, and stoma care is taught step by step.
Why is neck dissection often done at the same time?
Laryngeal cancer commonly spreads to cervical lymph nodes, and addressing the neck in the same surgery gives the best chance of disease control. The exact extent of neck dissection is decided by tumour board based on imaging and biopsy.
Will THANC provide a personalised estimate for laryngectomy?
Yes. After multidisciplinary review of your imaging and biopsy, our team shares a written, case-specific estimate covering surgery, stay, reconstruction and the rehabilitation package. THANC's rates are consistently lower than prevailing market rates in Chennai.
